As a speaker I am constantly "outrunning the headlights" of my clients with respect to adoption cycles in new technologies. I suspect there is much deeper wisdom at work as large populations let technology iterations sort themselves out. I would have bet HD would dominate Blu-Ray... (I was wrong about Beta too). Your commentary speaks to a deeper problem, however, and that is the growing divide between the people who perceive that they "get it" and those who are simply fed up with the task of keeping up. It is indeed an issue of literacy--and the power that comes with the access to knowledge.
